Verly dating guide · Adults 18+

Dating in South Africa, with intention.

Online dating works better when you can say what you are looking for, respect a different answer and take the time to build trust. Here are practical ways to begin.

By the Verly team · Updated 4 October 2026

Start with a profile that sounds like you

Use a recent photo you have permission to share and a short description of your interests. Say whether you are here for dating, friendship or community. A profile does not need your workplace, home address, phone number or daily routine. Leave sensitive details for later, if you choose to share them at all.

Ask about something they chose to share

A first message can be simple: “You mentioned local art galleries. What was the last exhibition you enjoyed?” It gives the other person something real to answer. Send one thoughtful question, then allow time for a reply. See our conversation starters for more ideas.

Talk about intentions early

Some people want a relationship; others are exploring friendship or a values-based community. Asking “What kind of connection are you hoping for?” helps you avoid assumptions. No subscription or flower buys a reply, attention or consent. If someone is not interested, respect their decision.

Make a first meeting safer

If you both decide to meet, choose a public place, arrange your own transport and tell a trusted person where you are going. Keep your banking details, verification codes and identity documents private. Stop the conversation and report a profile if someone pressures you for money or personal information. Read our Safety Centre before meeting.
